Abstract:

Encouraging greater access to transport, including public transport modes, can substantially transform the livelihoods of disabled people and their immediate families. Improved mobility is a crucial element in alleviating poverty throughout the developing world, as it can allow disabled people to play an active role in society, both economically and socially.

Overseas Road Note 21, an output from project R8016, is aimed at improving access to transport and hence reducing mobility barriers of disabled people in developing and transition countries. ORN21 utilizes principles of universal design to improve access to pedestrian and public transport systems for all users.
