Abstract:

Many serious crashes involve older individuals. This paper examines behavioral, vehicle and environmental factors contributing to increased crash and injury risk to older pedestrians due to the complex environment of vehicles, speed and traffic volume. Walking is a major mode of travel but leaves pedestrians, particularly older ones, vulnerable to harm. Pedestrians have their own set of needs which should be taken into account when planning roads. In this paper a review of international literature highlights key points in regards to older pedestrians and identifies “best practices”.
