Abstract:

This is a field study evaluating pedestrian flashers at an urban intersection. The results of the study showed a marked improvement of motorists yielding to pedestrians in the crosswalk. The installation got good reviews by both pedestrians and motorists, especially as used at night. Further, the system seemed to be effective even in winter.

Planners and municipal transportation departments should give it consideration, particularly at unmarked crosswalks and locations where drivers don’t expect crosswalks.
