Abstract:
This paper presents summaries of eight separate panel discussions and several dozen papers presented at an MIT symposium that represented a narrowed focus relative to the 2001 OECD Paris symposium Ageing and Transport: Mobility Needs and Safety Issues. The symposium included participants from USDOT, AARP, Liberty Mutual, and researchers from various universities and transport research centers worldwide.
While mostly addressing vehicular transportation, many papers acknowledged a need to look at the whole trip, of which walking is a part. It is important to note among the policy recommendations, recommendation A.2, “Create and promote standards that enhance the mobility of older citizens” is one area that applies to all modes, and the first of three sub-strategies is “Fully adopt universal design principles for all modes of transport.”
Although very interesting and a good read, the document contained little information useful to accessible pedestrian environments.
