Abstract:
Analyzes current methodologies of assessing the Level of Service (LOS) for pedestrians and concludes by recommending a more satisfactory evaluation than the current LOS determination methods that are modeled after vehicular LOS studies. The aim is to generate a person-centered methodology that reflects the entire walking experience. Due to the author’s limitation in scope, the results are closer to a hypothesis on how to redefine LOS than an actual usable product.
The paper suggests that an analysis should be based on the following parameters: vitality, legibility, fit, access, control, efficiency, and justice. These are close to the 7 principles of Universal Design. The authors should be encouraged to amalgamate these two sets of principles if they continue to work on this topic.
